The newly released book entitled, “Cat Sense: A Feline Style for Living” by Karen Farrell, is a fully illustrated account of felines. It’s supported by an examination of what it is about a cat’s natural behavior that can inspire us on how to live well.
Dear Editor,
Congratulations to Governor Andrew Cuomo signing an executive order banning any chief executive who runs a private non-profit agency that receives state funding from earning more than $199,000 per year.
Dear Editor,
The dictator generals threaten that any adult who does not “vote” will be fined and only names acceptable to the dictator-generals are allowed to appear on the “ballots.”
Dear Editor,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Let us add this date to our calendars, September 9, 2012. It’s Grandparent’s Day. I tell you to add it because unfortunately we are rarely recognized, so come calendars don’t have it printed.
The Wave is a newspaper like any other – a local version of the Daily News or the New York Times. That we are hyper-local and carry only news of Rockaway and Broad Channel does not diminish our role or our responsibility to provide our readers with full and impartial news, no matter where it leads.
Dear Editor,
As we celebrate Governor Cuomo’s proposal to eliminate the Cross Bay Bridge toll for Rockaway and Broad Channel residents, we must ask some questions.
Dear Editor,
We hereby ask why this newspaper cares less about the lives of the citizens of the Rockaways and why don’t all of our local elected officials find it clear that we are in extreme danger from Hurricanes, Tsunamis, Earthquakes and other major disasters; we are not ready for any incident that could hit us.
City officials, with the full backing of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have blasted the federal judge who ruled that the FDNY intentionally discriminated against minority candidates in its hiring practices, calling him “media-obsessed” and “biased.”
New York City Councilman James Sanders Jr. announced the passage of Intro. 610-A, a bill that would make it impossible for motorists who receive a parking ticket to incur any additional penalties or late fees until 30 days after a guilty verdict has been sustained by an Administrative Law Judge.
A Far Rockaway man sought by police for his alleged role in a Beach 20 Street shooting last May was finally caught by police when they tracked his whereabouts to his mother’s East Harlem home, according to police.
For the past several years, there has been something of a battle going on between National Park Service officials and the leaders of several Rockaway organizations that use Fort Tilden and Riis Park as their local venues.
Dear Editor,
The MTA is now running a new line.
Instead of the old Q21 going to Beach 116 Street, it now runs from Queens Plaza shopping mall in Rego Park, to Beach 59 Street, Rockaway.
So everyone in Howard Beach and Broad Channel can shop at Stop & Shop and not have to change to the Q22.

Dear Editor,
As a nurse I am proud of the care that I provide my patients; I am especially proud of the care that was provided to my father by the nurses at Peninsula Hospital. As a professional you know the care that should be rendered; they provided that care with style and grace. They not only cared for my father but cared for us as well.
Dear Editor,
I applaud Assemblyman Goldfeder for answering the call to get involved in restoring the Rockaway Rail Line. He gets how important this would be to us, and he seems to believe it’s feasible. He opposes the Forest Hills bike lane which would eliminate the rail line’s easement.
While it appears that New Yorkers still love their governor, a new poll shows that voters don’t share Andrew Cuomo’s support for a huge convention center that a casino developer wants to build at the aging Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park.

A month-long manhunt that started in Connecticut ended in Far Rockaway last week when US Marshals busted a man hiding out inside a Lewmay Road house, wanted for a series of alleged sexual assaults in Connecticut, according to published reports.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation announced this week that it has opened up the proposal period to allow other developers to submit plans for the former Rockaway Courthouse at Beach 90 Street and Beach Channel Drive.
I finally found the old crystal ball, packed up with a box full of old Wave issues at the bottom of a carton I moved seven years ago and forgot about, in the back of the hall closet.
When I rubbed it up, however, it popped to life as if I had used it only yesterday.
Here’s what it told me about the second half of 2012.
JUNE
The City Council passed a law last week that will prohibit ticket hungry Traffic Enforcement Agents from writing you up for a parking ticket while you’re at the Muni-Meter paying for parking; instead, it would be possible to cancel those tickets on the spot if proof of parking purchase is shown.
The snow came, drifting down in the early hours that tipped Friday night into last Saturday morning. And excited children bounced up to the window ledge on bare feet to see the powdery dusting and inch or so drifts. “I’m going to build a snowman and make snow angels and play with my friends in the snow and and and and …. !!!”
Although Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder made one of his campaign promises to bring back the resident rebate on the Cross Bay Bridge for Rockaway and Board Channel residents, there were few who thought that he could actually do it. He did, and we suspect that he had the help of his mentor, Senator Chuck Schumer, in making it happen.
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo this week announced that the State Senate unanimously confirmed Joseph Lhota as Chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Thomas Madison as Executive Director of the New York Thruway Authority, and Gil Quiniones as President and CEO of the New York Power Authority (NYPA).

Tensions ran high last week as parents attended a meeting about the proposed phase out of PS 215 hosted by the Department of Education at the school in Far Rockaway.
Reading from a prepared statement Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott explained the reasons for the phase-out.

Shootings are not in short supply in Rockaway, but it is unusual for each of the two Rockaway precincts to be running a shooting investigation at exactly the same time.
The first call came in to the 911 system that there had been a shooting outside of McDonald’s, on Beach Channel Drive at Beach 92 Street at about 1:19 p.m. on Wednesday.

While it may not seem like it, there are times when good things happen in Rockaway. And, of course, there are times when a little finger pointing is necessary. This column consists of both.

No one can jerk a tear like Steven Spielberg. By the end of his new film, “War Horse,” the water works are rolling. The epic story of a remarkable horse who survives the battlefield rigors of World War I is thoroughbred filmmaking at its finest. It’s great to be in the hands of a master doing his movie in the traditional way, along the lines of David Lean and John Ford.

The new building of St. Malachy’s opened its doors near the beachfront at Beach 112 Street in December of 1898. The Sisters of St. Joseph were glad to finally leave their storefront place on Fifth Avenue in Rockaway Park (now Beach 116 Street).
